Ethan Vandenberg & Sofia Bieber Take Charge

Ethan Vandenberg and Sofia Bieber dominated the Canadian Youth Long Track Championships, overcoming obstacles to come out on top.

“Just line up how Will told you to and go.” Ethan Vandenberg’s pre-performance mantra is uncomplicated - it reminds him to rely on the mentorship of his coach, Will Dutton and to not worry too much. Obviously it works, Ethan won three gold medals at the CYLTC - in 7 Lap mass start, 500m and 1500m. He won a silver in 300m and took the overall title by a large margin. The Manitoba Speed Skating Association asked him to tell us more about his mantras, motivation and what’s next.

MSSA: What did winning in the Canadian Youth Long Track Championships mean to you?

EV: To me it means I’m the fastest, which builds confidence in myself. It makes me super happy and thankful for all the support my coaches and everyone gives me, and wouldn't be able to win even the smallest events without them.

MSSA: What (or who) is your biggest motivator?

EV: One of my coaches William Dutton and my Opa because he was one of the top Dutch skaters and I like to make them proud.

MSSA: What would you tell a beginner speed skater?

EV: Always skate low. Generating power through your push is super important. Trust the process and your coach’s program.

MSSA: What do you want people to know about speed skating?

EV: It’s extremely technically and physically demanding. You can’t just have one thing, everything has to be planned and practiced to win.

MSSA: Where is your favourite place to compete?

EV:Calgary and Winnipeg because of the facilities that are attached. Nice places to warm up and cool down.

MSSA: If you weren't pursuing speed skating, what sport would you choose?

EV: I also pursue cycling in all disciplines, but primarily mountain biking.

MSSA: How do you calm "butterflies" or nervous energy before a performance?

EV: I don’t really get that nervous, I already believe that I can win the race because I know that I have put in a lot of work and my coaches and everyone supporting me has also put in a lot of work.

MSSA: What one word describes you as a speed skater?

EV: Powerful.

MSSA: Do you have a mantra?

EV: “Just line up how Will told you to and go.”

MSSA: Who are your sports heroes?

EV: Mathieu van der Poel, Peter Disera and Graeme Fish.

Sofia also won three gold medals, but an unfortunate fall during the 7 Lap mass start almost threw her. Sofia got up immediately and raced to the finish. If she had not reacted so quickly, she could have finished 14th or lower in the 7 Lap event, losing the overall title. Her perseverance got her the 9th spot in that event and the Championship!

MSSA: What did winning in the Canadian Youth Long Track Championships mean to you?

SB: My success at the CYLTC means that my hard work and dedication is starting to pay off.

MSSA: What (or who) is your biggest motivator?

SB: My biggest motivators are my teammates and coaches. They are always there encouraging me and making sure I do my best.

MSSA: What would you tell a beginner speed skater?

SB: Have fun and listen to your coaches.

MSSA: What do you want people to know about speed skating?

SB: The best speed skaters make skating look so effortless. Don’t be fooled. I feel like I am skating fast but look so slow when I see the video footage.

MSSA: Where is your favourite place to compete?

SB: Calgary is my favourite place to compete. The ice and facility are great and they have a strong speed skating community.

MSSA: If you weren't pursuing speed skating, what sport would you choose?

SB: If I wasn’t pursuing speed skating, I would be playing soccer.

MSSA: How do you calm "butterflies" or nervous energy before a performance?

SB: I like to listen to music and get “in the zone” to help focus my attention away from my nerves.

MSSA: What one word describes you as a speed skater?

SB: I would describe myself as motivated.

MSSA: Do you have a mantra?

SB: My mantra is Just Go!

MSSA: Who are your sports heroes?

SB: My sport heroes are those who achieve their goals! Cindy Klassen is my sport hero.
